Swedish-American artist Aleksandra Mir is known for work made in a multitude of diverse mediums such as photography, film, painting and public exhibitions. Her formal education began with communication and media studies at Gothenburg University, and later she acquired a BFA for media arts at the School of Visual Arts, NYC. Afterwards she studied cultural anthropology at The Graduate Faculty, The New School for Social Research, New York. Aleksandra Mir produces pieces both individually and with the contributions from various kinds of participants such as art students, friends or random folk who happen to be passing by at the time. One of her most famous series of work is The Dream and the Promise, which is made up of pieces that contain Christian iconography merged together with imagery involving space related sciences. The goal of this series is to create commentary on the relationship between religion and science. Another famous work titledNewsroom 1986-2000, was created by Aleksandra Mir and numerous assistants and consists of a series of images that were handmade reproductions of NYC tabloid newspapers made with sharpie markers. This project eventually ended up progressing to muralist works that were also made with only sharpies as well as having contributions from multiple assistants. Aleksandra Mir isn't limited to just visual arts and on occasion is known to dabble in performance art. One such project known asFirst Woman On The Moon involved creating an artificial moonscape with bulldozers on a beach where she proceeded to stand on the highest mound of sand where she planted an American flag. She then invited spectators to join her and celebrate with champagne. Mir has an impressively long list of exhibitions that have been shown worldwide starting in 1997 that includes numerous solo shows. Though Aleksandra Mir holds duel citizenship in the U.S. and Sweden, she is currently based in London.
