Silkscreen on Saunders Waterford 425 gsm fine art paper - Published by Lococo Fine Art // Arial 1 (2021) by Alex Katz is a limited-edition silkscreen print that captures a close-up portrait of a woman with flowing orange hair. Katz’s signature style of bold, simplified forms and flat areas of color is evident in the smooth rendering of the figure’s face. The subject's serene expression is highlighted by soft lips, sharply defined eyebrows, and eyes that gaze off into the distance, creating an introspective yet vibrant mood. Katz's minimalistic approach enhances the elegance of the composition, while the warm hues of orange and yellow in the hair contrast with the cool, muted tones of the skin, lending a sense of calm and balance. Published by Lococo Fine Art, this silkscreen exemplifies Katz's exploration of modern portraiture through reduction and abstraction.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
