Signed and numbered // Six Aquatints is a portfolio created by Alex Katz in 2013. This series presents six striking black-and-white portraits, executed using the aquatint technique. Katz's minimalist style shines through in these works, where the strong contrast between the black backgrounds and the pale faces of the subjects highlights their features with sharp clarity. Each portrait displays a unique individual, rendered in Katz's characteristic flat, graphic manner, focusing on essential facial elements while omitting unnecessary detail. The repetition of form across the six pieces creates a cohesive visual dialogue between the subjects. Each print measures 74.6 × 86 cm (29.4 × 33.9 in) and the portfolio is signed and numbered by the artist. Katz’s work in this series continues his exploration of portraiture, stripping down the human face to its most essential elements while maintaining an expressive and engaging presence.

What is Nouveau Realism?
Nouveau Réalisme is an artistic movement founded in 1960 by art critic Pierre Restany and painter Yves Klein during a collective exhibition at a gallery in Milan. Restany wrote the original manifesto in April 1960, proclaiming the movement. In October of that year, nine artists, including Martial Raysse, Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, Arman, Pierre Restany, and three Ultra-Lettrists—Jacques de la Villeglé, François Dufrêne, and Raymond Hains—signed the declaration. In 1961, the movement expanded to include Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, Gérard Deschamps, and César. The movement emphasized a return to reality in art, often incorporating everyday objects and exploring the boundaries between art and life.
