Ladies and Gentlemen, FS II.128

Andy Warhol’s Hammer and Sickle: One Plate, 1977 screen print of abstracted hammer and sickle symbols in bold black lines on white background.

Screenprint, on Strathmore paper, the full sheet. - An unsigned trial proof (the regular edition was 50 and 10 artist's proofs), with the Estate of Andy Warhol and the Visual Arts Foundation inkstamps on the reverse, initialed 'T.J.H.' by Timothy J. Hunt of the Andy Warhol Foundation and annotated '069A UT.001' in pencil on the reverse, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, New York. // Andy Warhol’s Hammer and Sickle: One Plate (F. & S. 161) (1977) is part of his Hammer and Sickle series, which explores the symbolism of the communist emblem within the context of Warhol’s pop art style. This screen print, rendered in bold, black lines on Strathmore paper, presents a simplified and abstract depiction of a hammer and sickle, tools that are traditionally associated with labor and communism. Warhol’s treatment of the symbol, often seen in repeated and decontextualized forms, reflects his exploration of mass production, commodification, and the shifting meanings of symbols in different cultural contexts. In this unsigned trial proof, Warhol transforms a powerful political image into a minimalist and somewhat neutralized composition, highlighting the distance between symbolism and consumer culture. The work is accompanied by authentication from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, signed by Timothy J. Hunt.

What is Comic Strip Art?

Comic strip art refers to artwork that utilizes the subject matter and commercial printing techniques found in comic strips. In the 1960s, a group of artists began creating paintings that incorporated Ben-Day dots—commonly used in comics and advertising—to produce highly graphic designs in bright colors, using traditional art media.
