In The Bottom of my Garden IV.94A

Andy Warhol, In The Bottom of My Garden IV.91A, lithograph with watercolor. Pink figure stands on a blue horse holding arrows.

Lithograph with watercolor - Authenticated, unsigned // Andy Warhol’s In The Bottom of My Garden IV.91A is a lithograph with watercolor from around 1956, showcasing a playful and surreal scene. In this work, a cherub-like figure stands triumphantly on the back of a blue horse, holding a red fan in one hand and what appear to be arrows or branches in the other. The simple lines and flat color fields create a childlike, whimsical tone, with the vivid blue of the horse and the soft pink of the figure contrasting each other. The arrows lodged into the horse's back and its somewhat stoic expression introduce an element of tension to the otherwise carefree scene, hinting at themes of vulnerability or conquest. Warhol's early work continues to explore innocence and fantasy in this dreamlike composition.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
