Andy Warhol, In The Bottom of My Garden IV.94A, lithograph with watercolor. Two pink cherubs, one with a large hat holding a bird.

Lithograph with watercolor - Authenticated, unsigned // Andy Warhol's In The Bottom of My Garden IV.94A is a lithograph with watercolor, created around 1956. This piece depicts two cherub-like figures, rendered in vibrant pinks, engaged in a whimsical scene. One figure, adorned with a large blue and purple hat, stands while holding a bird and a key, suggesting symbolic meanings related to freedom or knowledge. The other figure lounges playfully on the ground, holding a flower. Both figures have small, delicate wings, adding to the fantasy-like quality of the scene. The bold, cartoonish colors and playful tone in this work are characteristic of Warhol’s early explorations of whimsical and surreal themes.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
