Portfolio of ten screenprints on Beckett High White paper - Each signed in ball-point pen on the reverse, stamp-numbered - Published by Castelli Graphics and Multiples Inc., New York, with the artist's copyright stamp verso // Andy Warhol’s Mao (Complete Suite) (F. & S. 90-99), produced in 1972, is a dynamic portfolio of ten silkscreen prints on Beckett High White paper, each signed and stamp-numbered. The series reflects Warhol’s fascination with the intersection of political figures and pop culture, transforming the image of Mao Zedong into a pop art icon. Each portrait in the suite presents Mao in a bold and colorful palette, with variations in background hues and facial accents, emphasizing the reproducibility and commercialization of political imagery. Warhol’s approach comments on the influence of mass media, presenting Mao as both a revered leader and a celebrity figure. This series stands as a quintessential example of Warhol’s skill in reinterpreting iconic images in a provocative, visually arresting style.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
