Andy Warhol's Marilyn (F. & S. 29), 1967 screen print, stylized Marilyn Monroe portrait in bold pink, orange, and blue.

Signed, dated and numbered - Screenprint on paper // Marilyn (F. & S. 29) is a 1967 screen print by Andy Warhol, part of his iconic series centered around Marilyn Monroe. This limited edition print, signed and numbered, features Warhol’s characteristic use of vibrant, contrasting colors. The portrait of Monroe is rendered in shades of pink, orange, and blue, giving the famous image a sense of abstraction and otherworldliness. Warhol’s fascination with celebrity culture and media repetition is central to this artwork. By reimagining Monroe’s well-known face in such bold, simplified tones, Warhol blurs the line between idolization and commercialization, making a statement on how fame transforms individuals into commodified images. The interplay of color and form adds a dynamic quality to this screen print, making it both a tribute to Monroe and a commentary on the nature of fame.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
