Untitled (Mao), from The New York Collection for Stockholm

Andy Warhol's Satyric Festival Song, 1986, screen-print, two vibrant figures of Martha Graham in dynamic poses with bold turquoise and purple color against black.

From Martha Graham Portfolio - Screenprint on Lenox Museum Board // Satyric Festival Song, II.387 by Andy Warhol, created in 1986 as part of the Martha Graham Portfolio, is a vibrant and energetic screen-print that exemplifies Warhol's fascination with movement and performance. This piece features two identical figures of Martha Graham, the iconic American modern dancer and choreographer, depicted in dynamic, exaggerated poses. The figures, wrapped in flowing garments, appear to be caught mid-dance, their arms raised expressively, symbolizing the passion and freedom of movement that defined Graham's work. Warhol employs his signature bold, contrasting colors—turquoise, purple, and neon yellow—against a stark black background, giving the figures a sense of intensity and drama. The use of repetition and vibrant color overlays captures the energy and modernity that Warhol celebrated throughout his career. This screen-print is part of a limited edition series printed on Lenox Museum Board, further solidifying its importance as a collectible work in contemporary art.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
