Etching and aquatint on Gvarro paper // Composition III by Conrad Marca-Relli is a 1977 etching and aquatint on Gvarro paper, showcasing the artist’s mastery in abstract forms and textural contrasts. The artwork presents a bold black rectangular shape with rounded corners, divided by an irregular central area that alternates between textured brown and a pale beige. The roughness of the brown area contrasts with the smooth, open space next to it, highlighting Marca-Relli's exploration of space and form. The minimalist composition invites viewers to contemplate the balance between presence and absence, solidity and void, a common theme in Marca-Relli’s work.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
