Till Death Do Us Part - Heavenly Peppermint Green Silver Gloss Racing Green

Damien Hirst Ellipticine etching with colorful grid of evenly spaced dots on white paper, referencing pharmaceuticals.

Etching in colors on wove paper. Ellipticine (2007) by Damien Hirst is a vibrant etching composed of an orderly grid of multicolored dots on white wove paper. Part of Hirst’s iconic Pharmaceutical series, the work visually references both the systematic aesthetics of scientific cataloging and the randomized beauty of color. Each dot is precisely measured and evenly spaced, yet no color repeats in an identical arrangement, evoking a balance between order and chaos. The title refers to an anti-cancer drug, aligning with Hirst’s ongoing interest in the intersection between art, science, and mortality.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
