Mixographia print on handmade paper // Cash for Tolls 2 (from Rusty Signs) by Ed Ruscha, created in 2014, is part of his Rusty Signs series and is a mixographia print on handmade paper. This piece, like others in the series, mimics the texture and appearance of corroded metal, giving it a rugged, industrial feel. The words CASH FOR TOOLS are embossed in bold, geometric letters, creating a stark visual impact. The rust-like texture and distressed surface add a layer of authenticity, evoking the aesthetic of worn, vintage signage. Ruscha’s choice to present everyday phrases in such a format highlights the intersection of language, art, and commercialism, a recurring theme in his work. Limited to 50 editions with 10 artist’s proofs, this print combines the tactile experience of handmade materials with the conceptual depth of Ruscha's commentary on consumer culture and the art of signage.

What is New Topographics?
New Topographics is a term coined in 1975 by curator William Jenkins to describe a group of photographers whose work focused on formal black-and-white images of urban and industrial landscapes. Jenkins initially described their aesthetic as banal, but the photographers themselves argued that their compositions were as significant as those of natural landscapes, emphasizing the beauty in everyday, man-made environments.
