Open Book With Worm Holes

Ed Ruscha Ex Libris lithograph, bold white text framed by ornate black design on a red-to-blue gradient background.

Lithograph // Ed Ruscha’s Ex Libris, created in 2018, is a limited edition lithograph measuring 14 by 12 inches. The artwork features the phrase Ex Libris prominently in white, set against a gradient background transitioning from deep red to blue. The text is framed by an ornate, black and white decorative border, reminiscent of classic bookplates. The use of strong, contrasting colors and the bold typography typical of Ruscha’s work give the piece a modern, graphic feel, while the traditional border nods to the art of book ownership and literary culture. This blend of old and new elements highlights Ruscha’s ongoing exploration of text as art, presenting it in a visually compelling and thought-provoking manner.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
