Francisca Sutil is a Chilean
abstract artist who is known for her dedication to exploring technical process as a way of evoking meaning. Sutil's preferred medium has evolved over her career, beginning with printmaking in the mid seventies, shifting to paper making from the late seventies to the mid eighties, and then to painting from the mid eighties on. At every stage Francisca Sutil has paid close attention to the techniques used to create her pieces, resulting in intricate and exquisite constructions, such as
abstract and sculptural works of cast paper and paintings of multi-layered hues. Recently she has stripped down the complexities of her art and explored the product of simple, careful, repetitive techniques, such as single brush strokes applied in rows on a plain background, producing a textured field that invites contemplation. Francisca Sutil's work can be seen in a number of museums, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Museo de Artes Visuales in Santiago, Chile. (
