Lithograph and screenprint on 320 gram Arches Cover pper - Published by Petersburg Press New York - Suite: Shards // Frank Stella’s Shards I (1982) is a limited edition mixed media print from his Shards series, combining lithography and screenprinting techniques. The composition is a vibrant fusion of geometric abstraction and dynamic forms, filled with bold lines, irregular shapes, and a rich palette of contrasting colors such as pink, blue, green, and black. The overlapping elements and intersecting lines create a sense of depth and motion, reflecting Stella’s innovative use of materials and his continual exploration of the picture plane. The title Shards suggests fragmentation, which is echoed in the scattered and broken forms throughout the artwork. This piece exemplifies Stella’s impact on post-painterly abstraction and minimalism.

What is minimalism?
Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
