Vase de Fleurs Jaunes

Georges Braque lithograph Le Char III (Char Verni), 1955, featuring a stylized chariot and horse in black lines over a textured, earthy-toned composition.

Lithograph in colors with embossing and varnish on wove paper Published by Maeght, Paris Signed and numbered in pencil Georges Braque’s Le Char III (Char Verni) (1955) is a richly textured lithograph that reflects his deep engagement with Cubism and symbolic abstraction. This composition, printed with embossing and varnish, presents a fragmented scene enclosed within a dark, box-like frame, drawing the viewer into a mysterious, almost dreamlike space. At the center, Braque depicts a mythological chariot and horse in bold black lines, layered over a patterned background. The interplay of light and shadow, along with earthy tones and geometric forms, creates a striking contrast between movement and stillness. Published by Maeght in a limited edition of 75, this work exemplifies Braque’s late-career exploration of texture, depth, and classical themes.

What is Cubism?

Cubism is an art movement that aimed to depict multiple perspectives of objects or figures within a single picture. Artists Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso pioneered this style around 1907. The name Cubism emerged from their use of geometric shapes and outlines that often resembled cubes, breaking objects down into abstracted forms.
