Günther Förg's Mr. Orange, 2002 mixed media, three copper-toned elongated shapes on vibrant orange background with minimalist design.

Tempera on copper on panel. 40.3 x 29.5 x 2.3 cm. Signed and numbered on edition label verso. Numbered - The edition was published on the occasion of the exhibition "Günther Förg. To the builders" // Mr. Orange by Günther Förg, created in 2002, is a mixed media piece featuring tempera on copper mounted on an orange panel. The composition displays three elongated, organic forms in a soft, metallic copper tone, standing out against the vibrant orange background. The forms, resembling abstract brushstrokes, have a sculptural quality that interacts dynamically with light, resulting in subtle shifts in color and shadow. Förg's minimalist approach draws attention to the contrast between the warm orange and the smooth coppery textures, inviting contemplation on the interaction between color, material, and form. This work embodies Förg’s exploration of abstraction and simplicity, using minimal elements to create a visually compelling piece.

What is Colour Field Painting?

Colour Field Painting is an abstract style characterized by large areas of a single color or simple, solid colors. The term was first used in the 1950s to describe the work of three American Abstract Expressionist painters—Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still. Their work emphasized the emotional power of color and the creation of vast, meditative spaces through expansive color fields.
