Lithograph, signed by hand, numbered // Aurore sur la montagne by Guillaume Corneille, created in 1991, is a vibrant lithograph that showcases his characteristic use of bold colors and playful forms. The scene features a large, purple mountain with winding blue lines, seemingly symbolizing roots or connections, set against a green and yellow background that could represent dawn breaking over the landscape. A stylized red bird, with expressive lines and a dynamic pose, flies toward the mountain, adding a sense of life and movement. The sun, partially visible with a dotted orange and yellow halo, enhances the mystical quality of the composition. This artwork reflects Corneille’s interest in nature, symbolism, and a whimsical visual language.

What is the CoBrA movement?
CoBrA stands for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam; the group was formed with a desire to break away from the existing art movements of the time. Their critique of Western society led them to experiment and evolve into a significant international movement. CoBrA was founded on November 8, 1948, at the Notre Dame Café in Paris, where its manifesto was signed by Karel Appel, Joseph Noiret, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Constant, and Asger Jorn. The group was united by a shared commitment to freedom in both form and color, and their work emphasized experimentation and spontaneity.
