// Esmeralda by Guillaume Corneille, created in 2002, is a vibrant etching that embodies the artist’s love for bold colors and imaginative, symbolic imagery. The composition features a stylized female profile in bright yellow with a crown-like adornment on her head. She is surrounded by whimsical creatures—a blue bird below and a yellow, spotted creature that seems to float beside her. The vivid red background accentuates the figures, creating a striking contrast that enhances the surreal, playful atmosphere of the piece. Corneille, a founding member of the COBRA movement, often explored themes of fantasy, freedom, and connection to nature in his work. Measuring 47 cm by 65 cm, this limited edition print invites viewers into a colorful, dreamlike world where animals and humans coexist in harmony, infused with warmth and mystery.

What is the CoBrA movement?
CoBrA stands for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam; the group was formed with a desire to break away from the existing art movements of the time. Their critique of Western society led them to experiment and evolve into a significant international movement. CoBrA was founded on November 8, 1948, at the Notre Dame Café in Paris, where its manifesto was signed by Karel Appel, Joseph Noiret, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Constant, and Asger Jorn. The group was united by a shared commitment to freedom in both form and color, and their work emphasized experimentation and spontaneity.
