Somewhere to Light

James Rosenquist's Tide etching with deep blue geometric and swirling forms, exploring the balance between technology and nature.

Original etching with aquatint on paper - Published by Multiples Inc New York // Tide by James Rosenquist, created in 1979, is a limited edition etching with aquatint published by Multiples Inc. in New York. Measuring 23.75 x 41 inches, this artwork showcases Rosenquist's unique blend of abstraction and Pop Art sensibilities. The composition is dominated by two main elements: a geometric, fragmented structure on the left and a circular, swirling form on the right, both rendered in a deep blue hue. The juxtaposition of these forms suggests a balance between mechanical precision and organic movement, reflecting Rosenquist’s exploration of the interplay between technology and nature. The textured quality of the aquatint technique enhances the sense of depth and dimension within the print.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
