Mixed media with silkscreen tie and stuff on board. Edition/Printer: Schellmann Art // Christo Javacheff's Package on Carrozza (1984) is a limited edition mixed media print that embodies the artist’s fascination with wrapping and transforming everyday objects into visual art spectacles. This piece, measuring 56.5 x 71 cm, features a detailed sketch of a traditional carriage (carrozza) with its load completely wrapped in fabric, held by cord-like bindings. The mixed media technique, incorporating silkscreen and collage elements, adds texture and dimension to the illustration, emphasizing the sense of concealment central to Christo’s work. The black and brown hues create a subdued, contemplative atmosphere, while the meticulous lines and shading capture the shape and movement of the carriage. Handwritten notes and measurements on the artwork give it an architectural and preparatory feel, allowing viewers a glimpse into Christo’s process. This piece invites contemplation on the act of wrapping as both an aesthetic and conceptual exploration of covering and revealing. It is a testament to Christo’s innovative approach in the realm of contemporary art, transforming the ordinary into something profoundly thought-provoking.

What is site specific art?

Site-Specific Art is a form of artwork created to exist in a particular location, with the artist considering the site as an integral part of the creative process. Robert Irwin was a key figure in promoting this art form in California. Site-Specific Art emerged as a reaction against modernist objects, which were often portable, commodified, and confined to museum spaces. In contrast, Site-Specific Art is inherently tied to its location, challenging the traditional notions of art as a transportable and marketable commodity.
