Screenprint in colors on museum board - Signed by Basquiat's sisters, Lisane Basquiat's and Jeanine Heriveaux's in pencil, the artist's estate stamps and dated on the reverse - Published by Flatiron Editions, New York // Hollywood Africans in front of the Chinese Theatre with Footprints of Movie Stars by Jean-Michel Basquiat, originally created in 1983 and released as a screen-print in 2015, is a bold and thought-provoking work that tackles issues of race, identity, and cultural representation. The artwork features three abstracted faces, rendered in Basquiat’s distinctive raw and expressive style, alongside fragmented text and symbolic imagery. The words HOLLYWOOD AFRICANS and references to the Chinese Theatre and movie star footprints underscore the work’s commentary on the limited and stereotyped roles of African Americans in Hollywood and popular culture. Basquiat’s use of scribbled text, such as “TEETH” and “Z,” as well as the inclusion of symbolic figures and objects like a sun and the outlined heads, add layers of meaning and critique to the piece. The work blends graffiti, primitivism, and high art influences, all hallmarks of Basquiat’s signature style, challenging viewers to reflect on the racial dynamics within the entertainment industry.

What is Figuration Libre?
Figuration Libre is an art movement that is equivalent to the French Bad Painting and Neo-Expressionism in Europe and America. The term was coined by Ben Vautier and the Fluxus movement. In 1981, Robert Combas, François Boisrond, Hervé Di Rosa, and Rémi Blanchard formed the Figuration Libre group. The term can be interpreted as free style art, emphasizing spontaneity, freedom, and a rejection of traditional artistic conventions.
