Screenprint in colours, on Somerset Satin paper - Signed and dated by Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux (Administrators of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat) in pencil with the Estate stamp on the reverse - Published by Flatiron Editions, New York (After Basquiat; postume edition.) // Leeches by Jean-Michel Basquiat is a limited edition screen-print produced posthumously in 2017, based on the artist’s original work from 1983. Published by Flatiron Editions, New York, and signed by the Estate's administrators, this piece measures 56 x 76.2 cm and is printed on Somerset Satin paper. The artwork exhibits Basquiat’s signature style—expressive lines, chaotic composition, and symbolic imagery—using vibrant colors and text elements to convey intense social and political commentary. The overlapping motifs of leeches, skulls, and fragmented text explore themes of power, identity, and systemic exploitation, offering a raw and unfiltered view into Basquiat’s critical perspective on society.

What is East Village Art?
In 1981, Patti Astor opened the first art gallery in New York City's East Village, helping to launch the careers of various artists and musicians. The gallery started small but quickly gained popularity, contributing to the emergence of art movements such as Neo-Expressionism and Street Art in the area. The East Village became a hub for these new artistic expressions. However, the gallery closed in 1985 due to waning interest.
