From the Editions I Portfolio - 19 color screenprint - Signed by Gerard Basquiat, the Administrator of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat at the time of publishing // Untitled (Per Capita) by Jean-Michel Basquiat, originally created in 1983 and released as a screen-print in 2001, is a dynamic example of Basquiat’s iconic use of symbols, text, and graphic imagery. At the center of the composition, a bold red rectangle with a crown outlined in blue takes prominence, surrounded by the word “ASBESTOS” in bold text. The phrase PER CAPITA is written at the top in blue, suggesting themes of societal commentary and wealth distribution. Surrounding this central motif are various sketches, diagrams, and symbols that are characteristic of Basquiat’s exploration of complex themes such as mythology, power, and industrial hazards. His trademark crown symbol, often representing royalty or self-empowerment, is a focal point in the image. The layered, chaotic elements create a collage-like effect, blending abstraction and figuration, and evoking both childlike creativity and deep, intellectual reflection. This posthumous edition is signed by Gerard Basquiat, who managed the estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat.

What is Figuration Libre?
Figuration Libre is an art movement that is equivalent to the French Bad Painting and Neo-Expressionism in Europe and America. The term was coined by Ben Vautier and the Fluxus movement. In 1981, Robert Combas, François Boisrond, Hervé Di Rosa, and Rémi Blanchard formed the Figuration Libre group. The term can be interpreted as free style art, emphasizing spontaneity, freedom, and a rejection of traditional artistic conventions.
