L'Invention Du Feu - D284

Joan Miró's Grand Duc II - D395, 1965, etching with abstract owl-like figure in vibrant lines on dark background

Etching and aquatint in colors, on Arches paper, with full margins. I. 26 7/8 x 20 7/8 in. (68.3 x 53 cm) - S. 35 1/4 x 24 7/8 in. (89.5 x 63.2 cm) - Signed and numbered 45/75 in pencil (there were also some hors commerce), published by Maeght, Paris. // Grand Duc II (Grand Duke II) - D395 by Joan Miró, created in 1965, is a limited edition etching and aquatint that captures the essence of Miró's unique abstract style. Rendered on Arches paper, the composition features a striking contrast between vibrant lines and a dark background. The abstracted form, with bold white outlines and colorful accents in red, blue, and yellow, suggests an owl-like figure, giving the piece a sense of mystery and regality, as hinted by its title. The organic shapes and expressive linework evoke movement and depth, while the use of negative space allows the figure to stand out boldly, embodying Miró's mastery in creating visual intrigue through simplicity.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
