Lithograph on paper - Published by Brooke Alexander Editions // Joel Shapiro's Untitled (3) (1979) is a lithograph on paper, measuring 37 x 42.5 cm, published by Brooke Alexander Editions. This minimalist composition features an abstract arrangement of black forms, loosely enclosed by a delicate line structure that suggests movement or interconnectedness. The asymmetry and simplicity of the shapes create a sense of balance and fluidity, while the open space surrounding the forms enhances their stark presence. Shapiro’s work often encourages viewers to interpret ambiguous forms, and here, the contrast between the bold black shapes and the soft, sketch-like lines invites contemplation of form and space.

What is minimalism?
Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
