Lithograph in colors on Arches paper - Published by Brooke Alexander Editions and Paula Cooper Gallery, New York - Printed by Derrière l'Étoile Studios, New York, // Joel Shapiro’s Untitled (Double Red) (1980) is a lithograph in colors that exemplifies his exploration of geometric abstraction. Printed on Arches paper, this limited edition piece features two adjacent forms: a minimalist red polygon on the right and an outline of a similar shape on the left, rendered in thin, black lines. The pairing of filled and outlined shapes highlights the contrast between presence and absence, solidity and transparency. This composition invites viewers to ponder the relationship between space, form, and color. Published by Brooke Alexander Editions and Paula Cooper Gallery, and printed by Derrière l'Étoile Studios, New York, the print subtly balances simplicity and complexity through its restrained visual elements.

What is minimalism?
Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
