Etching with aquatint on Rives B.F.K paper - Signed, numbered and dated in pencil // Two Figures (One with Shadow) by John Baldessari, created in 1986, is an etching with aquatint on Rives B.F.K paper. The artwork features two contrasting black-and-white photographic images placed one above the other. The top image depicts a tragic, possibly violent scene, showing a lifeless body lying on the ground, while the bottom image presents a seemingly relaxed figure sunbathing on a beach. A striking red shadow underlines the lower figure, creating a jarring and thought-provoking contrast between the two images. Baldessari’s use of juxtaposition and color draws attention to themes of violence, leisure, and the perception of reality, characteristic of his conceptual and provocative style. The piece is signed, numbered, and dated in pencil.

What is minimalism?
Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
