Melbourne Statuettes: Backpack

Julian Opie's Melbourne Statuettes: Cardigan, 2018, black bronze sculpture of a minimalist female figure with crossed arms, set on a light stone base.

Freestanding patinated black bronze figure on Crema Grey light stone base // Julian Opie's Melbourne Statuettes: Cardigan (2018) is a freestanding sculpture made from patinated black bronze, mounted on a Crema Grey light stone base. Part of a limited edition of 25 with an additional 4 artist proofs, this piece features a stylized and minimalist female figure standing with arms crossed. The figure, depicted in Opie’s signature outline style, wears a long cardigan and a skirt, conveying a casual, everyday posture. The clean lines and simplified form focus on the essence of the figure, emphasizing movement and individuality through abstraction. The black bronze contrasts effectively with the light stone base, creating a visually striking yet understated piece that captures the quiet elegance of the human form.

What is animation?

Animation is the process of displaying a sequence of static images in rapid succession to create the illusion of movement. Each image, or frame, is slightly altered from the previous one, particularly in the moving parts, so when shown together, they form a continuous motion. Traditionally, illustrators drew each frame by hand to produce this effect.
