Julio Le Parc's Collage Original (Black and White), 2018, features black and white striped geometric shapes arranged in a balanced composition on paper.

Collage and painting on paper - Signed in marker - Unique piece // Collage Original (Black and White) by Julio Le Parc, created in 2018, is a unique collage on paper that embodies the artist’s exploration of geometric abstraction and optical effects. The composition, measuring 26 x 21 cm, features a series of black and white striped shapes—triangles, squares, and parallelograms—arranged in an intricate, balanced manner. These elements create a dynamic interplay of lines and forms, resulting in an optical illusion that shifts as the viewer’s perspective changes. The sharp contrast between the black and white stripes enhances the sense of movement and depth, making the piece visually engaging. Le Parc’s mastery in manipulating simple geometric shapes to produce complex visual experiences is evident, aligning with his broader oeuvre that often challenges perceptions and explores the boundaries of visual art. This piece, signed in marker, highlights his commitment to kinetic and op art principles through the medium of collage.

What is kinetic art?

Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
