Julio Le Parc's Mod 9, 2018 lithograph, monochromatic grid with gradient shading, creating an illusion of depth and movement across the surface.

// Mod 9 by Julio Le Parc, created in 2018, is a lithograph that embodies the artist’s expertise in optical and kinetic art. This composition features a grid of monochromatic squares with soft gradient shading that creates an illusion of depth and movement. The meticulously arranged squares seem to recede and protrude, generating a three-dimensional effect that draws the viewer's eye across the surface in a rhythmic flow. The alternating tones and shadows produce a pulsating visual experience, where the flat surface appears to come alive. Le Parc’s work here is a study in the dynamics of light and shadow, showcasing his skill in transforming simple geometric patterns into engaging optical illusions.

What is ‘light and space’?

The Light and Space Movement refers to loosely affiliated art movements connected to minimalism, geometric abstraction, and op art that originated in Southern California in the 1960s. Greatly influenced by artist John McLaughlin, these artists focused on sensory phenomena such as light, perception, and space as central elements of their work. They also incorporated cutting-edge technologies from the aerospace and engineering industries to develop light-filled and sensuous objects, creating immersive experiences that emphasize the viewer's perception.
