Walking Alone

Karel Appel's Circus Suite, No. 18, etching with embossing; abstract, colorful figures with bold lines on a dark background.

Etching with embossing // Circus Suite, No. 18 by Karel Appel is a vibrant limited edition etching with embossing, created in 1978 as part of an edition of 130. This work captures Appel’s playful and expressive style, with bold, childlike figures set against a dark background. The bright, contrasting colors of lime green, neon pink, electric blue, and vibrant orange bring an exuberant energy to the scene. The figures, seemingly inspired by circus characters, have exaggerated and abstract features, adding a whimsical and dynamic feel. Appel's signature impasto style enhances the texture, making the composition feel lively and tactile, reflecting his spirited approach to form and color.

What is the CoBrA movement?

CoBrA stands for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam; the group was formed with a desire to break away from the existing art movements of the time. Their critique of Western society led them to experiment and evolve into a significant international movement. CoBrA was founded on November 8, 1948, at the Notre Dame Café in Paris, where its manifesto was signed by Karel Appel, Joseph Noiret, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Constant, and Asger Jorn. The group was united by a shared commitment to freedom in both form and color, and their work emphasized experimentation and spontaneity.
