Original mixed media print in colors with embossing on Arches paper - Published by Editions Canada - Suite: Bedized Pudding Canadian - Hand signed by Appel in pencil // Karel Appel's Face (1979) is a striking mixed media print that showcases his bold and expressive approach to portraiture. This limited edition print, measuring 30.6 x 22 inches, is created using vibrant colors and embossing on Arches paper, which adds depth and texture to the piece. The artwork features an abstract, distorted face with exaggerated features, including wide eyes, a prominent nose, and a toothy grin. The print is part of the Bedized Pudding Canadian suite, published by Editions Canada, and is hand-signed by the artist in pencil. Appel's playful yet chaotic aesthetic is evident, inviting viewers to engage with the emotional and visual energy emanating from the portrait. This piece is a testament to Appel's position as a key figure in post-war European avant-garde art.

What is Tachisme?
Tachisme is a French abstract painting style that gained popularity between 1940 and 1950, often seen as the European counterpart to Abstract Expressionism. However, there are stylistic differences between the two. Tachisme, which emerged from Art Informel, rejected geometric abstraction in favor of more intuitive and spontaneous expression. It was a reaction against the structured forms of Cubism and is closely related to Informalism. Tachisme emphasizes gestural brushwork, irregular forms, and a focus on the process of painting itself.
