Lithograph in colors on Japan paper - Published by London Arts Inc. Detroit - Suite: Cats Portfolio // Walking Cat by Karel Appel, created in 1979, is a lively and expressive lithograph from the Cats Portfolio. The limited edition print, rendered on Japan paper, captures the dynamic movement of a cat through bold and gestural brushstrokes. Dominated by hues of blue, purple, and orange, the composition features an abstract, fragmented depiction of the feline figure, evoking a sense of motion and spontaneity. The strokes, layered and intersecting, give the illusion of the cat’s form striding confidently against a textured background of lighter blue tones. This work, published by London Arts Inc., highlights Appel’s signature style associated with the CoBrA movement, emphasizing raw expression and playful abstraction. The vibrant palette and energetic strokes invite viewers to experience the playful energy and imaginative essence of the subject.

What is the CoBrA movement?
CoBrA stands for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam; the group was formed with a desire to break away from the existing art movements of the time. Their critique of Western society led them to experiment and evolve into a significant international movement. CoBrA was founded on November 8, 1948, at the Notre Dame Café in Paris, where its manifesto was signed by Karel Appel, Joseph Noiret, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Constant, and Asger Jorn. The group was united by a shared commitment to freedom in both form and color, and their work emphasized experimentation and spontaneity.
