Kiki Smith was an artist in residence at Pilchuk Glass School in the summer of 1993. At the end of each session there is an auction of artists and students art work with proceeds to benefit the school. This piece was created during the residency. // 1st State Self Portrait by Kiki Smith, created in 1993, is an etching that captures a hauntingly intimate and textured self-portrait. The work, created during Smith’s residency at Pilchuck Glass School, reveals her characteristic style of detailed line work and organic textures. In this print, the face appears weathered and deeply expressive, with an almost spectral quality, as if capturing both the physical and emotional layers of the self. The loose and intricate lines that form the hair and facial features suggest vulnerability and introspection. This piece is a powerful exploration of identity and the human condition, rendered in a minimalistic yet impactful manner.

What is East Village Art?

In 1981, Patti Astor opened the first art gallery in New York City's East Village, helping to launch the careers of various artists and musicians. The gallery started small but quickly gained popularity, contributing to the emergence of art movements such as Neo-Expressionism and Street Art in the area. The East Village became a hub for these new artistic expressions. However, the gallery closed in 1985 due to waning interest.
