Das schwarze Paar und der Musikant

Marc Chagall lithograph Notre-Dame et la Tour Eiffel, 1960, depicting a surreal Parisian landscape in deep blue tones with the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame, and a glowing moon.

Color lithograph on Velin D Arches - Published by Andre Sauret, Monte Carlo - Suite: The Lithographs of Chagall, Volume I - Comes with a copy of signed triage page Marc Chagall’s Notre-Dame et la Tour Eiffel (1960) is a dreamlike color lithograph from The Lithographs of Chagall, Volume I, published by André Sauret. Rendered in deep blue tones, the composition merges two of Paris’s most iconic landmarks—Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower—into a poetic, surreal scene. The moon glows softly in the background, casting an ethereal light over the architecture, bare trees, and abstract figures. Chagall’s signature expressive brushwork and delicate linework infuse the piece with movement and emotion, transforming the cityscape into a vision of memory and romance. Created in a limited edition of 100, this lithograph exemplifies Chagall’s fascination with Paris as a place of artistic inspiration and enchantment.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
