Lithograph // Gitanes by Mel Ramos is a limited edition lithograph from 1999, measuring 30.9 by 22.45 inches. The artwork is a playful blend of advertising and pop art, typical of Ramos' style. It features a nude blonde woman leaning over a large cigarette pack labeled "Gitanes Légères," with bold blue and white colors contrasting against a warm yellow-orange background. The image draws on the aesthetics of commercial culture, using humor and sensuality to critique and parody the objectification often seen in advertising. Ramos’ work cleverly transforms the mundane into a provocative visual statement.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
