Lithograph with collage // Nelson Leirner's Picasso Toros-1 (2012) is a lithograph with collage elements that pays homage to the traditional Spanish bullfight, infused with Leirner’s critical and playful approach. The artwork presents a series of stylized black silhouettes of a bullfighter and charging bulls, arranged sequentially to evoke motion and drama. Leirner incorporates textured elements, such as vibrant red and yellow adornments on the bulls, enhancing the piece's dimensionality and emphasizing the spectacle of the corrida. The collage component, a plush black bull with colorful embellishments, adds an element of whimsy and critique, blurring the line between cultural iconography and kitsch. This work reflects Leirner’s engagement with popular imagery and his commentary on ritualized forms of entertainment, merging respect for tradition with a questioning gaze.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
