Untitled 6

Nobuyoshi Araki's Untitled 7, hand-painted Polaroid featuring a deep black abstract form with hints of blue and smudges, 10.5 x 9 cm.

Original polaroids, hand painted by Araki, signed at the reverse // Nobuyoshi Araki's Untitled 7 is an evocative hand-painted Polaroid that plays with the boundaries of abstraction and photography. Measuring 10.5 x 9 cm, this piece features a deep, almost entirely black central form that dominates the composition. The edges of the image reveal subtle hints of blue, blending into the darkness and creating an enigmatic, almost void-like appearance. The left side of the Polaroid has streaks and smudges, where Araki has manually manipulated the surface, adding a textured, tactile quality that contrasts with the smooth, dark center. The result is a haunting, minimalistic image that evokes a sense of mystery and introspection. Araki’s signature on the reverse authenticates the artwork, showcasing his exploration of the expressive potential within the limitations of the Polaroid format.

What is Shock Art?

Shock Art is an art movement that uses disturbing images, scents, or sounds to provoke a strong, often shocked, reaction from viewers. It is often regarded as a form of social commentary, with critics and supporters debating whether its impact is positive or negative. Shock Art frequently employs taboo, obscene, or outrageous elements to challenge societal norms and provoke critical thought.
