Deux buveurs Catalans, from La Suite Vollard

Pablo Picasso’s Faune Flûtiste et Bacchantes, etching on wove paper, depicts a faun playing flute surrounded by dancing figures.

Etching on wove paper // Pablo Picasso’s Faune Flûtiste et Bacchantes (1968), from La Série 347, is an exquisite etching on wove paper, showcasing the artist's mastery of line and movement. This limited edition print depicts a lively and mythical scene of a faun playing the flute surrounded by dancing Bacchantes. The figures, rendered with Picasso’s characteristic fluid and expressive lines, exude energy and sensuality, creating a composition brimming with life and dynamism. The juxtaposition of the faun's musical focus and the Bacchantes' wild, uninhibited movements reflects themes of mythology, desire, and celebration. Measuring 10 x 12.8 inches and part of an edition of 50, this piece highlights Picasso's innovative approach to traditional themes, reimagining them with his signature modernist style.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
