Nu aux Bottines, from La Série 347 (B. 1724; Ba. 1741)

Pablo Picasso linocut Tête d'Histrion (Le Danseur), 1965, depicting a stylized theatrical figure with bold, angular lines in black and brown.

Linocut in black and brown, on Arches paper, Unsigned and unnumbered. This work is one of three trial proofs apart from the numbered edition. Printed by Imprimerie Arnéra, with the archive stamp on the back. Published by the Musée des Augustins, Toulouse, with full margins, Image: 25.25 x 20.75 in. (64.1 x 52.7 cm.) Sheet: 29.5 x 24.4 in. (74.9 x 61.9 cm.) Pablo Picasso’s Tête d'Histrion (Le Danseur) (1965) is a striking linocut in black and brown, exemplifying his mastery of the linocut technique. The composition features a fragmented, highly stylized portrait of a theatrical figure, possibly a dancer or performer, depicted with bold, angular lines and exaggerated facial features. The expressive carving technique gives the work a sense of movement and energy, reminiscent of Picasso’s fascination with masks and performance art. This particular piece is one of three trial proofs aside from the numbered edition, printed by Imprimerie Arnéra and published by the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse. With its raw, dynamic style, this work reflects Picasso’s continued innovation in printmaking during the later years of his career.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
