Confidences

Paul Delvaux’s Le Bout du Monde, 1969, surreal lithograph of women standing by water at night, one seated figure in foreground.

Lithograph on Arches vellum, annotated H.C. outside the edition of 50 copies - Catalog Note: Theme which will inspire the painting with the same title in 1969, reference 310 of the catalog raisonné of the painted work -Cahier Paul Delvaux n°2, Galerie Le Bateau-Lavoir, Paris, 1969, n°18 - Paul Delvaux Retrospective, Museum of Decorative Arts, Paris, 1969, n°74 - Image: 52 x 74.5 cm; 20 1/2 x 29 3/8 in - Sheet: 65 x 85 cm; 25 5/8 x 33 1/2 in // Paul Delvaux's Le Bout du Monde is a haunting lithograph that exemplifies the surreal, dreamlike quality of his work. The scene portrays a group of ethereal women, partially nude, standing in an eerie nocturnal landscape by the water's edge. The central figures, with their calm, almost detached expressions, seem to be gesturing towards an unseen force or distant horizon. To the right, a lone seated figure gazes pensively, adding to the mysterious atmosphere. The moonlit sky and the shadowy trees in the background create a sense of isolation and timelessness, evoking Delvaux's fascination with the female form and the subconscious. The composition, rich with symbolism and surrealism, recalls themes of desire, solitude, and the passage of time. Hand-signed and numbered, this lithograph was later reinterpreted by Delvaux in a painting of the same title.

What is Postmodernism?

Postmodernism is an art movement that emerged as a reaction against authority and traditional boundaries, seeking to blur the lines between art and everyday life. It aimed to bridge the gap between the cultural elite and the general public by embracing eclectic mixtures of earlier conventions and styles. Postmodernist art often challenges established norms and celebrates diversity, irony, and pastiche, making it a movement that reflects the complexities of contemporary culture.
