A major figure in artistic development between 1955 and 1965, Paul Van Hoeydonck is the creator of the only piece of art to have a permanent place on the moon – Fallen Astronaut, a 3.5 inch aluminium structure, was designed as a tribute to all of the astronauts who have died throughout the history of space exploration; the figure was placed on the moon in secret by astronaut, David Scott, alongside a plaque bearing the names of fourteen astronauts, all of whom had died in service. Hoeydonck was associated with the influential Zero group, and his friends included fellow artists such as Lucio Fontana and Heinz Mack.
