Silkscreen // Robert Indiana's (Marilyn) Descent of a Love Goddess (2008) is a limited edition silkscreen that pays homage to Marilyn Monroe and her iconic status. The artwork features a central image of Monroe, framed within a circular design filled with text that reads THE DESCENT OF A LOVE GODDESS and repeated instances of the word LOVE surrounding her figure. The palette consists of warm, muted tones of beige, brown, and cream, creating a vintage aesthetic that aligns with Monroe’s era. Indiana’s use of bold typography and simplified imagery reflects his pop art roots, while the circular composition and layered text evoke a sense of Monroe's enduring, yet complex legacy as a symbol of beauty, love, and tragedy.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
