From the 'Men in the Cities' portfolio - Two original lithographs on Arches paper - Each hand-signed, dated and numbered in pencil - Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich - 72 x 35 7/8 in. (182.9 x 91.1 cm), each // Gretchen & Eric by Robert Longo, created in 1985, is a striking diptych from the Men in the Cities portfolio. The two lithographs, printed on Arches paper, feature dynamic black-and-white images of two figures—Gretchen and Eric—in exaggerated, contorted poses. The figures appear mid-movement, with sharp, angular forms and intense gestures. Gretchen, depicted on the left, is captured with her head thrown back and her body leaning to one side, while Eric, on the right, is shown bending backward with his head pulled sharply by a tie, creating a dramatic visual tension. The stark contrast between the figures' sharp attire and their chaotic, suspended movements evokes a sense of emotional turmoil and conflict. Longo's use of high-contrast shading and attention to detail makes these pieces both visually arresting and conceptually rich, encapsulating themes of power, strain, and the alienation of urban life.

What is Performance Art?
Performance Art is a genre of fine art that is traditionally interdisciplinary, involving various art forms. It can be scripted or unscripted, random or carefully orchestrated, spontaneous, or meticulously planned, with or without audience participation. Performance Art can be presented live or through media, with the artist either present or absent. It typically involves four basic elements: space, the performer’s body or presence through a medium, time, and the relationship between performer and audience. The artwork consists of actions performed by an individual or group in a specific time and space.
