Lithograph in colors and chine appliqué on TGL handmade paper and red Moriki handmade paper - Hand signed and numbered in pencil. - Published by Tyler Graphics Ltd., Bedford Village, New York "// Robert Motherwell's 'Gypsy Curse (Engberg & Banach 314)' (1983) is a striking lithograph that showcases his distinct abstract expressionist style. The piece features a bold black gestural form set against a vibrant red-orange background created with chine appliqué on handmade paper. The simplicity of the composition, with its central abstract shape resembling a cross or figure, is contrasted by the intensity of the color. The brushstrokes are characteristic of Motherwell’s spontaneous, gestural approach, evoking both emotion and a sense of raw energy. The use of handmade papers—TGL handmade paper and red Moriki handmade paper—adds a tactile quality to the piece, highlighting the artist’s attention to material and texture. The composition can be interpreted as a meditation on form and space, with the open, abstract structure inviting multiple readings. This work, like many of Motherwell’s, reflects his ongoing interest in the interplay between form, color, and the emotional resonance of abstraction."

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
