Roy Lichtenstein's De Denver au Montana, Départ 27 Mai 1972 (II), etching and aquatint, vibrant cartoon-like bursts and shapes in yellow, blue, and white on a red background.

From La Nouvelle Chute de l'Amerique - Etching and aquatint on 250-gram Velin d'Arches paper - Hand-monogrammed in pencil, and numbered in Roman Numerals - Corlett 276 // De Denver au Montana, Départ 27 Mai 1972 (II) by Roy Lichtenstein, created in 1991, is a limited edition etching and aquatint from the suite La Nouvelle Chute de l'Amérique. This print features Lichtenstein’s signature Pop Art style with bold, graphic imagery reminiscent of comic book aesthetics. The composition is dominated by explosive bursts and vibrant, cartoon-like shapes in yellow, blue, and white set against a rich red background. Lichtenstein uses dynamic lines and his characteristic Ben-Day dots to create movement and energy. The playful combination of abstract forms and bright colors captures a sense of action, making this piece both visually striking and conceptually engaging.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
