Screenprint, lithograph, and collage with embossing on Rives BFK paper - Hand-signed by artist - Blind stamp, lower right: (Tyler Graphics Ltd). Workshop number on verso - Published by Tyler Graphics Ltd., Bedford Village, New York // Roy Lichtenstein's Entablature V (142) (1976) is a compelling work from his Entablature series, blending screen printing, lithography, collage, and embossing to explore classical architectural elements in a modern pop-art context. This piece is characterized by horizontal bands of patterns and textures, with a prominent deep blue stripe dominating the central portion. Above and below this blue band are decorative designs, including a sleek, rhythmic black and white motif at the top, and intricate scrollwork in white embossing at the bottom, reflecting classical ornamentation. The contrast between the bold, simplified forms and the detailed ornamental patterns showcases Lichtenstein's ability to juxtapose modernity with tradition. The clean lines and geometric shapes reference architectural facades, but through the lens of pop art, creating a dialogue between historical references and contemporary techniques.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
