Roy Lichtenstein's Hüm Bom, etching and aquatint, vibrant comic-inspired explosive shapes in blue, red, yellow, and white against a black background.

From the suite: La Nouvelle Chute de l'Amérique - Etching with aquatint on 250-gram Velin d’Arches paper - Initialed and numbered - Printed by Atelier Dupont-Visat, L’Inediteur, Paris - Published by Les Editions du Solstice, Paris // Hüm Bom by Roy Lichtenstein, created in 1991, is a limited edition etching and aquatint print that showcases Lichtenstein's iconic Pop Art style. This piece, part of the suite La Nouvelle Chute de l'Amérique, features vibrant, explosive shapes against a stark black background. The dynamic bursts of blue, red, yellow, and white, coupled with Lichtenstein's characteristic use of Ben-Day dots and bold lines, evoke the aesthetic of comic book illustrations. The playful composition is filled with energy and movement, reminiscent of sound effects in action comics. Hüm Bom is a visual celebration of Lichtenstein’s signature exploration of mass media, commercial art, and abstract symbolism.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
