Roy Lichtenstein Two Apples, 1983 woodcut, bold black outlines and dynamic color fields in red, yellow, green, and blue.

Woodcut in colors on Iwano Kizuki Hosho - Image: 24.8 h × 34.8 w in (63 × 89 cm) - Sheet: 29.75 h × 39.25 w in (76 × 100 cm) - Signed, dated and numbered to lower edge - Published by Petersburg Press, New York. - Literature: Corlett 198 // Roy Lichtenstein's Two Apples (1983) is a vibrant woodcut in colors on Iwano Kizuki Hosho paper, measuring 63 x 89 cm (image) and 76 x 100 cm (sheet). Signed, dated, and numbered on the lower edge, this work was published by Petersburg Press, New York. Lichtenstein’s playful reinterpretation of still-life tradition showcases his signature Pop Art style, using bold black outlines and dynamic color fields in red, yellow, green, and blue. The exaggerated brushstrokes and stylized forms of the apples and surrounding elements create a dynamic tension between abstraction and representation. This work demonstrates Lichtenstein's exploration of texture and form through graphic simplicity, elevating everyday objects to iconic status. Documented in Corlett 198.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
